Teaching

“Music for every age and stage – from early steps to the concert platform.”

Introduction

Alongside my life as a concert pianist, teaching is at the heart of what I do. I am Senior Lecturer in Piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and if in my private tuition the aim is the same: to help every student feel at home at the piano and become a musician who thinks and expresses with clarity and conviction.

My teaching philosophy

Everything begins with secure foundations and with meaning. Notes and rhythm are never the goal in themselves; they are the tools for expressing an idea, and much of our work together is finding the purpose behind each phrase. I'll always be honest and clear with you – showing you where you are and the practical steps that lead to real progress – while encouraging you to grow your own musical judgement, since mine is only one informed view among many.

I believe that steady, thoughtful effort matters more than talent – it is what turns curiosity into growth. As an active performer, I bring the realities of the stage, of nerves and of communication into our lessons, always remembering that a musician is not the centre of attention but a bridge between the composer and the listener. What I love most is the moment a student begins to think for themselves and to feel truly at home in the music. My hope is simple: to stay genuine and sincere, and to help you find that same honesty and joy in your own playing.

Who I work with

  • Teenagers who already have some grounding at the piano
  • Adult amateurs – whether returning to an old love or beginning later in life
  • Young musicians preparing for exams, auditions and competitions
  • Advanced and conservatoire-level pianists

In their own words

A few of my students – from age 12 to 75 – on what our lessons mean to them, and on the music they love to play.
